WAR: Quarrel usually between nations conducted by force, state of open hostility and suspension of ordinary international law prevalent during such quarrel, attacks or series of attacks by armed forces; fighting as profession.
Writing contemporary history is one of the most hazardous academic professions, for chronicling events and analysing them is a tricky subject because of the inherent bias which creeps into writings. Furthermore, the turn of events and new evidences can make you look like a fool. But these are extraordinary times and since extraordinary situations call for extraordinary reactions, the common man has to speak out and stand up for his nation, values, culture and most importantly for the future generations, I offer my head for the chopping block. I do not wish my children to grow up under the shadow of guns and grenades instead giggles and gardens. Let the child know about Gandhi before he learns about Genghis Khan.
India is at war. The war is not between nations or religions but between an idelogy which professes pluralism and secularism against one which professe mindless violence, killing of innocents and vandalising. India is above religion, here Sufis existed with saints, here Tulsi, Nanak coexisted with Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti.
The country is in a state of shock and awe and all you can say is that the terrorists are shameless! What were you expecting Honourable Sir? Jalebis and Rossogollas??
The Prime Minister goes a step further and warns "neighbouring countries who support terrorists of consequences", without daring to name the countries and informing them of the consequences. When a country needed a man to stand up and say that the 'nation was at war, and we will win the war come what may", all we got was a timid Prime Minister evidently reading from a tele prompter and mouthing platitudes like “We will take a number of measures to strengthen the hands of our police and intelligence authorities. We will curb the flow of funds to suspect organisations. We will restrict the entry of suspects into the country. We will go after these individuals and organisations and make sure that every perpetrator, organiser and supporter of terror, whatever his affiliation or religion may be, pays a heavy price for these cowardly and horrific acts against our people,”
Kindly note the preponderance of the word "WILL'. Excuse me , Mr. P.M are we to assume that your government has been waiting for a carnage like this to happen and now you WILL do this and do that. Were the mindless loss of life for the past innumerable years not enough for the govt. to act as you now say you WILL? Who my respected sir, is responsible for the loss of life, destruction of numerous families, loss of property and most of all projecting India that is Bharat, as a soft target for anybody looking for a passage to jannat(heaven, for that is what these jihadis are brainwashed into believing) . Why can this country not ensure a quick getaway to Dozakh (hell) for these terrorists ?? Why can we not accept that Saudi Arabia with its oil money, more than Pakistan, is sponsoring these terrorists and their fundamentalist interpretation of Wahabism, in order to keep their focus away from the issue of control over the holy sites of Mecca and Medina ?
The P.M is also again mouthing ideas like a Federal Intelligence Agency and stuff. It would have been a good joke if lives were not involved. The govt. mouths the same ideas which it knows it is not going to implement, everytime the terrorists create mayhem and a few days later goes back to sleep. Nero was a King of Kings compared to the worthies we have. Atleast he played flute while Rome burnt, whereas our P.M looks in askance for permission to play flute from we all know who! Come on Sir, at least stand up against this menace . The country is behind you whole heartedly, provided you stand up and be counted.
The seriousness with which the govt. has faced terrorism can be judged from the fact that Terrorism was not even on the agenda when the National Integration Council met a couple of months back. This was subsequent to the horror of Ahemdabad and New Delhi. The meeting was ostensibly called to 'discuss' the internal strife between two groups of tribes in Orissa. Apparently the Vatican was displeased with the events in Orissa and therefore the meeting of NIC. The issue of Terrorism was added subsequent to loud protests from the C.M's of the other hue. Is this how we are supposed to face terror?
The entire city of Mumbai in particular and the country in general are being held to ransom by an unknown number of fidayeens, with the common people looking on in horror. The streets throughout the country are quiter than usual without anybody knowing where the next attack is going to come from.It is as if doomsday or Apocalypse has arrived. This is India's 9/11. This is a frontal assault on everything the nation stands for. India is scared, India where Swami Vivekanand said, " Have No Fear, Fear is death, Fear is Sin, Fear is Hell, Fear is Unrighteousness, Fear is Wrong Life." But let us face it, we are scared. Sample the reaction of the cine star Amitabh Bachchan who expressed his fear in his blog, "Last night, as the events of the terror attack unfolded in front of me I did something for the first time and one that I had hoped never ever to be in a situation to do. Before retiring for the night, I pulled out my licensed .32 revolver, loaded it and put it under my pillow. For a very disturbed sleep," Imagine if a man who lives under high security feels like this .........
That the entire machinery was caught offguard can be gauged from the approach of the ATS from the video shots of the late Hemant Karkare and his team. The brave officer is seen to approach the battle ground with his entire team following him as if they are confronting poor farmers sitting on a dharna, rather than a trained bunch of motivated fighters who have undergone commando training. The result is that some of the bravest of the officers have lost their lives whereas a bit of planning would have helped them fight a larger battle for the sake of the nation. Regardless of the brave fight put up, the ATS does have some explanation to do regarding the manner in which these terrorist sneaked in and have created mayhem. And please do not accept the theory of targetting foreigners, western interests and entering the city through small boats. The simple fact is that India has been attacked, once again.
These people would have been in the city for months together making reconissance of the taregetted places. An attack of this magnitude is beyond the capacity of people merely entering the city with rucksacks and letting go. Do not be surprised if these guys were staying in the same plush hotels as guests beforehand, who were merely joined in by attackers from the front gate. The method in which these guys are holding out rubbishes the simple story being played out. Can we have some truth after the crisis is over?
Or is it!!!!
The methodology of hostage taking is the pinnacle of terrorist achievements for besides from using them as human shields, these unfortunate hostages can be used as bargaining chips for deriving maximum leverage (remember Kandahar) and last but not the least, it gets them unlimited media coverage. Media is like the lifeline for any terrorist group in order to propagate their message and instil fear among the populace.
FEAR... we keep coming back to the operative word in any act of terror. Saturated coverage (watch BBC if you do not believe this) by the media of the free world ensures you publicity which no Al Qaida site would do in a life time.
With the risk of being labelled a conspiracy theorist, I perceive this act as a mere dress rehersal for something BIG. Remember the hostage taking in Jammu a few months back and now this. It appears that the terrorists are graduating to a higher level with each experience. I would appeal to our security agencies and the intelligence guys to include this input while analysing the incidence after it is done and over with. Please remember Beslan in Russia where Chechen terrorists took around 400 school students as hostage. The very thought is terrifying, but this in-your-face terrorism has to be confronted.....and defeated.
The nation has reposed faith in its politicians time and again and have been rewarded with this. The politician-bureaucrat- criminal nexus needs to be broken in order to confront this evil. Have we ever given thought to the fact that these terrorists are using the conduits of local criminals who might be sitting abroad but have their kingdoms intact ( does the name of Dawood ring a bell) , to ferry in their arms, ammunition and personnel. These networks ensure safe houses, local intelligence, local personnel for these terrorists. It is an open secret that these criminals are used by politicians to launder their dirty money, win elections in bargain of safety of their illegal business. The bureaucrats as the legendary Shikhandi provide cover to this dirty nexus in exchange of plum 'postings', 'transfer of the irritants (Read the limited honest officers), easy money and stuff. It appears that the nation and its citizens is the least of their concerns. This unholy triumvirate has to be broken, and broken fast.
India has been at the receiving end of these terror attacks for decades now and it is an amazing fact that this country has no special anti terror law . The govt. is pleased as a punch when it states that the existing laws like the National Security Act is enough to confront this scourge . The POTA was scrapped because it was ostensibly against a particular religion. The argument was that even the existence of POTA did not prevent the Akshardham or the Parliament attack. The argument leads one to draw an analogy and ask questions like Dowry deaths inspite of an equally ‘draconian’ anti dowry act (Sec. 498 of IPC), and murders inspite of section 302. Do we mean to say that these laws should be scrapped because of events to the contrary. As to the argument of POTA being used against a particular community based on the statistical evidence of the number of people arrested under it, will please any politician point out the identity of the persons committing these terror acts ? I once again assert my previous statements that terrorism has no religion, so please…please treat a terrorist like a terrorist, not a Hindu or Muslim or Sikh terrorist. Laws do not prevent crime but they ensure punishment for a crime thereby deterring future wannabes. Law is one of the arms to fight a terrorist and let us not fight this modern day asura with one of our arms chopped off. Besides let the judiciary decide on the applicability of the law in each and every case. No law is above judicial scrutiny, is it ?
One of the essential arms in fighting this terror i.e. the Police needs immediate reform. All of us saw the visuals of the brave guys of the ATS enter the battle zone with their outdated bullet proof vests while confronted with an enemy who is trained like an army commando and much more motivated. The ATS or any such force needs special equipments along with special training. The SWAT in the U.S.A is a special police force which tackles such exigencies. I wonder whether the ATS guys are trained on a regular basis judging by their work in the past one month, wherein they had been dragged unnecessarily into a political event. The investigation should be the part of a specialized team and the operations part should be left to the other experts. You cannot have officers like Hemant Karkare ,Vijay Salaskar and Asohk Amte both investigating as well as executing cases. Unfortunately we will not be having them anymore, but will we learn from our mistakes ? We better do, for these brave, nay very brave officers looked like Abhimanyu getting into the Chakravyuha without knowing how to get out of it.
The reform has also to come from within the police officers who have to stand up and be counted . For too long they have played along with the politicians for petty gains but the chickens have come home to roost. Senior police officers are ssen more in high profile parties rather than on their rounds. In small cities and towns the situation is far worse for the senior police officer is like the Mai baap for the place. They will bow before the local politician who generally is a ruffian/criminal, but will thrash a poor man on the street mercilessly. The police officers need to look within.
Mumbai has been brought on its knees. Our soldiers are fighting a very brave battle but the damage has been done. The purpose has been served for the masters as well as the perpetrators. The shrill propaganda of these youngsters having eliminated three of the top anti terror officers as well as holding on against the Army, the MARCOS and the NSG will earn them more recruits. Not for them the reason that the forces are proceeding cautiously in order to minimise collateral damage. They do not prescribe to the Indian ideology of each life being important . They proscribe to the ideology of mindless violence and such propaganda is like a boon from the God.
My thoughts are with the people held hostage and the brave sons fighting to save them. My prayers are with them. May God give them courage.
Like Swami Vivekananda said: “ The goal may be distant, but awake, arise and stop not till the goal is reached.”
“ We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender.”
VANDE MATARAM
P.S : My condolences to the families of the brave officers who laid down their lives for the cause of the nation and to those killed in this act of mindless violence.

What a shock this has been! As have all the other earlier incidents that have happened before.
But as you rightly said - this is in-your-face! Waging battle for more than 48 hours now...and I shudder to think what comes next and i am hoping and praying it will not be a place full of kids - because i think that will break our backs (if they are not broken yet that is)
If this is not war, then what is. Worse still this is war being waged on the streets of our country not on our borders. The same streets that children use to get to school, colleges, their parents to get to office, in the morning their grandparents use these streets to walk or jog on, to socialize - are we safe in these streets? I guess we haven't been for long now! We just keep ignoring it
I am hearing constantly about public memory being short...but I would like to say that media memory is even shorter where they do not ever ever follow up on things...the media reaches everywhere so maybe it can do its job in keeping public memory fresh!
Of course we the common people of this country do need to do a lot and very simply we in our daily lives are from where the change will really come from!
Let's be a little more cooperative when our bags are checked at malls, or cinema halls or wherever else - it's for our own safety! Let's act like we are a nation under threat and each one of us can help in the security situation rather than ignoring some stray bag lying around for "fear" of being embarrased!
I am amazed with what you have said about the agenda of the National Integration Council - are we blind or just plain and simple SICK!
How quick we are to say "the city stood up, got back to normal" in a fraction of a second and all that nonsense - let's remember it isn't important how fast we stand up, atleast not as important as whether we remain standing and also do we have it in us to "stand up and be counted" in the larger scheme of things
Jai Hind!
Agree wholeheartedly that the change has to come from within. The nation is at war and therefore every citizen has to act like a soldier. Surrender is not an option and let us make it very clear to the enemy. The nation and its will cannot be broken. Let us all resolve that the bravery of our commandos will not be forgotten.
My salutations to the brave soldier who fought on inspite of heavy odds. And what does our govt. do? Provide them BEST buses for transport after the encounter. Do our politicians and bureaucrats have got any shame left? The worthies move around in BMW's and they are ostensibly 'PUBLIC SERVANTS' .. some servants!!
The nation demands a uniform poicy to combat this menace. Enough of negotiations and peace process, NEGOTIATION FOR WHAT? PEACE WITH WHOM? The leaders better be compelled to provide answers.
And for heavens sake, the common man will have to speak out, rather than simply close his TV and wait for the next horror show. Please do not forget that the immediate battle might have been won, but the WAR GOES ON. And do not forget the dead.
This is a crying shame that the nation has no memorial to commemorate its dead and his valour. The only one at INDIA GATE was built by the British for the martyrs of the Ist World War. We build Shanti vana, Shakti sthal ... God knows how may memorials for the dead politicians. But not one for the brave soldier. Let us wait for one for V.P.Singh, while Major Unnikrishnan and Vijay Salaskar pass away into the footnotes of History. What a shame!!
I fully endorse your views. You have given words to thoughts of many people like me.
Now,the situation in our country is much more than alarming- it is threatening and disturbing. This time it was Mumbai, may be the next target is some small city. This time it was indiscriminate attack, may be next time the target is carefully chosen(a school/ a hospital/ research establishment/ university- anything).
The country is bleeding. And so are our hearts.
Shocked and shamed.We all are.
A lot was expected from the Prime Minister of India in his speech to the nation. But it appeared that he too was shocked beyond words.
This does not augurs well for the country.Instead of instilling some courage to the shell shocked nation, he made us more fearful. Hindi me bole to unko TV par aa kar dahdna chahiye tha par kambakht uo memia kar chale gaye!
This proves that not necessarily a good economist and an honest politician can be a good P.M.Lalu Yadav(perhaps)could have done a better job.Kam se kam lalkar to sakte hi they!
Today,on 29th November,the nation is on cross-roads.Clueless.
OPTIONS:
Flash attack on the terrorist camps in POK or in Bangladesh will give a signal that this time we mean business.
This will also fetch votes for the Congress and its allies.Remember December 1971 attacks on the then Eastern Pakistan and the consequent electoral benefits to the Congress Party.Even Atalji called Indira Gandhi as'Durga' for that.
A day after, we will be in December and as aptly writeen in the blog-'Extraordinary siuations call for extraordinary reactions'.The badly bruised nation needs an offensive act against the perforators of terrorism.December is calling Manmohan ji.All the tags of valour attached to the SARDARS will go to the dust if you don't act now.
On my part I can assure you that even Advaniji will term as 'Hanuman' and the nation en-masse will vote for the Congress party.
So why wait?
The performance of the P.M in this hour of crisis was sickening. There might be internal compulsions within the ruling coalition but he is pathetic. Everybody blames the Home Minister but what about the person who heads the govt. The same P.M in September 2006 called Pakistan as much a victim of terrorism as India and now is blaming the same victim of terrorism for terrorism. Mr. P.M make up your mind! Remember him having 'sleepless nights' when Hanif was arrested by the Australian Police on charges of terrorism. And when it comes to his own country he says "We Will" How long will this nonsense go on? Wherever he goes The P.M is always accompanied by the the chairperson of the coalition, for photo ops. Why is the P.M not above political considerations in times of crisis.
One thing is clear, Economics and National security cannot be left in the hands of people with political interests only. The nation is too precious to be destroyed like this .Look at the mess we are in, in both the fields.
My tributes to the glorious dead. They died so that we could live peacefully.

Jeevan ki Bharat mein keemat hi kya hai?
Operation Parakram, post the attack in Parliament, is still fresh in our memory. For months we stood eyeball to eyeball with the Pakistanis without any policy in place. So knee jerk military attacks without a clear vision might yield to stalemate. Not that I am against it, but the appeal to the people who matter is to have a clear mission. The leaders let down the armed forces in 1947-48, 1965, 1971 when a victory at the battle field was given away on the negotiating table.
Since the Big Boss is applying maximum pressure on Pakistan, my suggestion to the govt. would be to ask for Pakistan to immediately hand over Dawood Ibrahim and Hafiz Saeed (head of Lashkar-e-Taiba) for trial. I am certain we can call Pakistan's bluff on Dawood's absence in Pakistan. Assure the world of a free and fair trial. But please do not keep them like a son-in-law (aka Afzal Guru) subsequent to the trial. If the Pakistanis do not hand them over, ensure their elimination by covert means. The message needs to go down that no Indian death will go unavenged. I know it is difficult, but then draw inspiration from the statement of an NSG commando post the battle for the Taj, "HAMARE LIYE KOI KAAM MUSHKIL NAHI HAIN".
Amen to that.
The armed forces at some time have to assert theirself over the leaders in matters of national security. The politicians have to be told that the free ride at the back of the armed forces is over.
COURAGE IS THE RESISTANCE TO FEAR, MASTERY FO FEAR- NOT ABSENCE OF FEAR----MARK TWAIN.
My message to the fidayeens, mujahideens or whoever they are, is that Bharat will never surrender, come what may. It might sound like emotional bravado, but we will fight to the last man, irrespective of our religious or political affiliations.
I completely completely agree with eliminating Dawood and the head of lachkar-e-toiba...and the flash attacks where they need to be done to show that we mean business
You see, there is already enough repressed anger in the country - whether it be against politicians, teerorist attacks, the media, the law (or the lack of it) - and if we don't start hitting back (whatever way we choose to hit back), this anger will come out in the wrong way. And it already seems to be coming out in the form of "hindu terrorism" (honestly i have no idea what that was about, but my instinct tells me it was hit back in some warped way)...believe me that will just be a start.
We will need to channelise our anger - and this blog has done it's service towards that objective, and is continuing to do so! Kudos
Keep at it people, that's what i would say to myself too. Am sure if we maintain our sanity, our determination, intelligence, lot more will come out of us.
We need to form/use any forum that we have access to show our solidarity - let's move away from differences between ourselves evidently and consciously in all all all forums that we may be a part of - say it aloud that "I will not be a part of creating differences"
We again have a common enemy (remember pre-independence) - let it unite us!
can we fight a war without understandimg the cause it is not only the publicity but the very thought that the pepole involved in this act is having the history of fighting for showing there dominance without any cause.
please understand this is not the outer invasion but an attack when the immunity of the nation is down why it happens because our own nation is already infected with these pathogens and we as a nation very much helping them to grow then then firts thing which will occur is not only this has already weaken the country but also invite the outer infections.
Please raise a voice to correct within.
yes, you discuss about police but india ned immediate attention for upgrading police as eqal to defece because it is an irony that defece has been more frequently calld for domestic peace than the border war.
because very often the police failed at various front to combat with TERROR .
Identify the cause and then attack .
I'd gone to the site of the attacks today. If you see leopold cafe, from where the terrorists moved to the taj to enter the hotel from it's back, you will see that the distance between the two places is atleast 100-150 metres...and this approach lane from leopolds to taj must have been packed with people then.
In fact, if some terrorists also moved from leopold's to the CST (station) then they would have had to pass a huge police station and I WONDER HOW DID THAT?
In fact when they started firing at Leopold's, then I wonder how the police at the police station which can almost be seen from leopold's did not act????????? Did they not get to know? Could they not hear gunfire? I hear the traffic had gone completely haywire there on hearing the firing. How did the police not hear?
Coming to the point - when the terrorists were running out from leopold's to taj, they would have crossed a very crowded lane...and today when i was passing the lane i was thinking if all the people in that lane (and i am sure there would have been some 100-150 of them there), if they all just by some power of god decided to pounce on the terrorists with whatever they could find and bloody ravage them, pund them into the ground...they could have done something...Would they not have been a bunch of proud people having done GREAT SERVICE to the NATION.
It might sound extreme to all you people but am telling you I was wondering all the time that I was there why they did not do that. If we are going to die in any case, why shall we not die fighting back? Why could we not attack them together?
Why can we not unite and fight the enemy - be it within or outside?
Think people think
Very informative and thought provoking.
Well that is what these terrorists are banking on, our failure to get united and the fear factor. We in this country need a system where people willing to be trained in the art of combat are provided training in arms use, rescuing people etc. God forbid if any of us are caught in a situation of exigency, we will not be able to operate a weapon if we chance upon it.
The situation called for Neuro Surgery and what did the doctor order.....A FACE LIFT. The Home Minister is replaced by a a man whose record as Fin. Min is equally atrocious, if not worse. News reports suggest that loyalty towards the Gandhi-Nehru family was one of the factors which weighed in his favour. Need we say more!
Incidentally, a Participatory note was recovered from one of the slain terrorists. Intelligence agencies and even the National Security Advisor have gone on record to state( on numerous occasions) that a very huge amount of money in the stock market is being pumped in by the terrorists. Participatory Notes is the prominent mode of funelling this money. But the Fin. Min (now the Hom.Min.) refused to ban these notes, inspite of the Tarapore Committee specifically recommending this act. Now the same person will look after internal security. GOD SAVE US!
News reports suggest that a few of the bureaucrats may also be sacked. Do not be fooled!! Sacking in Gov. parlance means that the person will be shifted from Home Min. to say Health min., obviously on the same perks. So a person who failed in his responsibility at the Home Min. will now damage the Health ministry. What Fun, na?
The response of the Late Major Unnikrishnan's father in asking the Kerala C.M and Home Minister to leave his house is syptomatic of the anger in the civil society against the politicians. Unfotunate, but true. Unfortunate becuase for good or bad, Democracy needs the political parties and therefore the politicians. It is just that the civil society faulted in not making them accountable. Accountability would have resulted in not only resignations but arests maybe, of some officers or leaders for culpable negligence.
We really have to start curing the disease within.
It is fine to sack the Home Minister. On other thoughts, He was not sacked by the P.M , but he resigned, but what difference will it make as long as we do not make systemic changes. I mean who will provide the reasons for keeping the plane carrying the NSG commandos waiting at the New Delhi airport for 45 minutes because of no clearance from the Air Traffic Control. But the leaders will say that it is not the time to go in for post mortem and sweep everything under the carpet.
Everyone knows that the people who matter in the ruling govt is the lady with the 'inner voice' and her Yuuvraaj. They have all the power but no responsibility. Why isn't the Yuvraj made the Home Minister and given some responsibility. Or is he to step in directly as the Prime minister after his road shows? The lady is 'unhappy' with her govt. so say the news channels. My ....my 200 dead in Mumbai and hundreds others also killed this year. And we are privileged to hear that the lady is 'unhappy'. What Nonsense? How long will this go on ?
If anybody it should be the P.M who should resign after his pathetic performance on this front.
Friends,
Please answer two questions:
1-What would have been your response if instead of Taj, people of Dharavi were held hostage and shot in the similar manner?
2-How can you treat Taj Hotel as pride of India when a common man is not allowed to enter there wearing sleepers, though he may have enough money to foot the bills.
It is a fact, and a naked one at that, that we shed more tears,we burn more candles when rich & mighty are affected.
Please don't conjure from above that they do not have the right to live and should necessarily be shot by the terrorists.
The response of the government was on the expected lines.Cosmetic changes here and there, blame game, poster baji...
The nation is angry and this anger should be channelised and more importantly sustained throughout.
Let us atleast now become Indians rather than residents of Dharavi or Malabar hill.
I believe that the hurt and shock is more becuase till now the enemy was unseen as he was using the method of targetting people through explosion, even Kandahar was largely unseen. But this time it is directly in-your-face. The horror which everybody was avoiding is staring us in the face. The bestiality, brutality of this enemy has every individual shaken. If we keep sleeping even now, then the future might be horrible or it might not be there at all.
I am sure that the terrorists did not target the Taj because it is the pride of India , but because of its symbolic value of being.....well, INDIAN. For them India remains the eternal enemy, becuae they dare not target the other enemies U.S.A.,ISRAEL, RUSSIA. India is and will remain a soft target if systemic changes, as somebody called it, will not be brought in.
Very true. But simply being Indian will not suffice unless we become honest Indians.
Terrorism has flourished not only due to ISI or any XYZ agency but also due to all pervading dishonesty in the society.
Anyway that is another issue and can be debated later. The time is ripe to build pressure on the politicians, cutting across party lines,to mend their ways.
Likes of Achutanand,Naquwi and many others who have shown disrespect either to the Martyrs or to the common man (who has become unified in the hour of national crisis)should be shown way by their respective parties.
Today there is water crisis in Mumbai due to reported power failure. The Breaking News in visual media today is that 70% of Mumbai will be without water today and not the anger/anguish of the comman man on the statements of Achuytanands or Naquwis of the day. These are some of the ploys by which the politician-bureaucrat nexus will try (in coming weeks) to cool down the anger of comman Indian.
Be Alert!
It's about 1 AM and before retiring to bed a thought came to my mind and I sms'ed to few of my friends and relatives for forwarding them in their circle.I wish to share it on this blog, too.
Like any ordinary citizen of this country I am also was shocked beyond words by the statements of the Kerala C.M and Naqwi and few others.I have a suggestion to make.Ignore if it is not any worth.
I feel that since we are a democratic country and our response should be given by ballots. The parliamentary elections are not very far away so I would suggest that the media and the common man should persuade Major Unnikrisnan's father,Karkares wife,Inspector Sharma's wife,Sawalkar's wife,Apte's wife and likewise other Kiths and kin of Martyrs of 27/11;to contest the forthcoming parliamentary elections as independent candidates.I think with the mood prevailing in the country, they will win from anywhere.
And believe me, Major Unni's father can be a better C.M than Achuytanandanji any day.
And this perhaps would be the most befitting reply.
The proposal is worthwhile considering, provided these people are willing to come forward on issues other than sympathy otherwise we know that what happens with the sympathy candidtaes. But a novel and worthwhile idea indeed.
Meanwhile the govt. should suspend all the so called Confidence Building Measures with Pakistan till they hand over Dawodd and Hafiz Saeed. No Cricket tours, no people to people contact. It has been seen that the CBM's result in confidence building of terrorists only.
The contry has to start looking inwards also. Although we are very good at anointing heroes immediately, an introspection has to be carried out. For example the Railway police fighting the terrorists at CST with guns which get jammed, sub standard bullet proof jackets for the Police, no strategy shown by the ATS while countering an attack (3 seniormost officers moving in One car while the city is under siege). We have to realise that bravery needs to be channelised like anger, otherwise it goes waste.
Please somebody enlighten me on the self appointed guardians of the Indian state, Indian secularism,Human rights and their utterances this time around. Let Amar Singh, Arndhati Roy, Shabana Azmi, Javed Akhtar come forward and certify whether the attack and the counter offensive was fake or for real.
Actually even I've been thinking why javed akhtar, arundhati roy, shabana azmi and the rest of the brigade hasn't surfaced yet...for obvious reasons i guess.
I agree with major unnikrishnan's nomination - he is a fiery individual...we as a country can do with some honest fiery people in politics and otherwise.
But one individual will not do! We need more and they will come from amongst us isn't it...so lets throw ourselves into the fray in some way
They are having a peace march in the fort area today and I am sitting in office completing some work! Though I do believe that life should not stop for anything. yet it is so important to stop sometimes, look around, pay respects, stand up, fight for right...and yes i think for the first time this time I have felt that our country is standing up, atleast our people are...
But at the helm - whether as politicians or as social representatives are pathetic people. Even if the latter group had been a better lot, we would have today moved leaps and bounds.
Even for those of us who cannot fight elections, we can take up some responsibility at a social level. That should be a great great help!
Like I have said before, this blog is doing its bit.
I am left thinking what I can do :)
The protest march in Mumbai was a huge step forward in the direction of citizen unity. But the problem is sustaining it over a long period of time. This is where the politicians step in, dividing people with all sundry issues. The citizen has to stay guarded.
It is my fervent appeal to the media not to give space to individuals like Arundhati Roy, Shabana Azmi and their ilk when they step out of their hibernation. These people are fermenting a dangerous game and need to be guarded against as much as other anti nationals and anti humanity elements.
Agreed with Shikha(ji)that one individual will not do.But only lighting candles and joining peace marches(Wearing 'Enough is enough' slogan T- Shirts)will not serve any long term purpose. The anger of the nation needs to be channelized and channelized urgently.
We are a vibrant democracy and the battle has to be won by ballots only. But the state of affairs have reached such a low ebb that yesterday we saw people yelling 'We want Military rule'(Thank God yelled 'Bring the Britishers back').
It is also very sad that, even with plethora of electoral reforms a common man can't even think think of contesting an election ;leave aside winning it.We Indian are carried away by emotions and every election from 1952 onwards were not fought on any issues but on the emotive issues prevailing at that time.
Presently the emotions against the existing breed of politicians are running very high and it is the right time that those emotions be channelized in a right direction by some apolitical person.
Similar public mood was channelized earlier in 1973 by Shri Jaipraksah Narayan culminating in installation of Janata party regime in 1977(that leaders like Lalu and Paswan and their ilk are by product of that movement-but that is an another issue). The Janata Party failed to deliver the goods but the intentions of J.P can never be doubted.
Unfortunately when we look around we find there is no one around of his stature. But a leader has to be desperately searched.
After lot of thought the name of Narayan Murthy comes to my mind.Perhaps he can be persuaded to take a plunge and lead the people who are desperately in mood of changing the present breed of politicians.
Time is running short.
Read- thank God yelled 'Bring the Britishers back' AS-Thank God no one yelled 'Bring the Britishers back'.
I feel that the urge to take the plunge should come from inside and persuading people to take the plunge leads to an unwilling horse. The track record of such sincere individuals who are above the skulduggery of current day politics is not exactly bright after they enter the realm of political governance. The name of our incumbent P.M is a case in point, an economist of some repute he has failed miserably inspite of best of intentions.
I appreciate the people who gathered in Mumbai the other day. Not for any dramatic change they were going to bring about or for their slogans like the ones cited in the above comment but for atleast the spirit they showed. Now comes the harder part_--Sustainability of the spirit. The pressure has to be sustained on the govt. Sadly the entire episode of change in guard of Maharashtra politics shows that nothing much has changed. Maharashtra is without a C.M and Home Minister for past few days while a political consensus is being arrived at. Persons with the following credentials may apply- Loyalty towards the Nehru Family (why bring Gandhi into it), loyalty towards Sharad Pawar, loyalty towards Vilas Rao Deshmukh,........Loyalty towards the Constitution ...What's that?????
Sustainability of the spirit; that is the precise worry. For any movement to succeed there has to be a leader who can lead from the front. That leader will guide the people. He will have to travel through the length and breadth of the country.Motivate the people.
That leader shall not necessarily enter the realm of political governance.Gandhi didn't became the Prime Minister of India. So did J.P.But both led the public movement.Channelizing the spirit of the people.
This is not happening and the spirit of nationalism shown on the preceeding Wednesday is receding very fast.Next Wednesday you will find a few thousands. And the Wednesday thereafter would be the Christmas eve and the nation would be in the Happy New Year mood. The 'spirits' would be overflowing but of a different kind.
Sad but true, all the talks of doing something for the nation/society will fizzle out in a 'fizz'.
That is why I am repeatedly talking abut the leadership.J.P did not take the leadership of the movement on his own.He was reluctant.Initially.But it was thrust upon him.The rest is history.Neverthless.
Petrol prices have been reduced by Rs 5/litre and diesel by Rs2/litre.Inflation is 8.23% down by 5% from the recent high.International price of petrol is likely to touch 25$/barrel.Ambani brothers have met Montek Singh Ahluwalia-who is being tipped as the next Finance Minister.Sensex is showing some signs of recovery.4 movies have been released this week with Sharukh Khan blockbuster 'Rab ne bana di jodi' scheduled for next friday release.Mausam bhi suhawana ho chala hai.People are desperately looking for a break.Sas bahu serials have taken over the News Channels. The reality show is over.
India is at war. The war is not between nations or religions but between an idelogy which professes pluralism and secularism against one which professe mindless violence , so plz stop it,
